When Count Basie and his band appeared at the Doubletree Inn's Grand Ballroom on May 10, 1978, "they played a pair of sets that were like definitions of what swing should be," the Star review said. "There is an unparalled vibrancy to the band's ensemble sound." Among the numbers they played were "Ja-da," "Night in Tunisia" and "Jumpin' at the Woodside." Tickets for the show were $5 and $7.50. Through the years, Count Basie played several gigs in Tucson; read about them at go.azstarnet.com/morguetales.
