Salaries for University of Arizona professors are above the national average for public universities but lag behind most schools with comparable research activity.
The annual report on college and university faculty salaries released Monday by the American Association of University Professors found that overall, faculty across the country saw their real income decline this year over last year. The 3.8 percent salary increase was erased by a 4.1 percent rise in the consumer price index, resulting in a loss of 0.3 percent.
The report also emphasized the rapid rise in college head football coach salaries, which now average a full 10 times that of the average full professor. The average salary for a Division 1 head football coach was $1.04 million, a 12.4 percent increase over the previous year. The average salary for a full professor at those same institutions was slightly more than $104,000, which was a 3.5 percent increase over the previous year.
At the UA, full professors average $113,100, which is about $3,500 more than the national average for all public doctoral universities and about $5,300 less than the national average for all doctoral universities, public and private.
The UA ranked 10th of 16 in a group of large public research universities the Arizona Board of Regents considers to be "peer institutions," though the report did not include data from the University of California-Berkeley. At the top of the UA's peer list, professors at the University of North Carolina average $138,500.
