A Tucson man who kidnapped his infant daughter and her mother before leading police on a car chase across Tucson was sentenced to 15 1/2 years in prison Friday.
The woman and her 7-month-old daughter were walking near South Sixth Avenue and 29th Street on Sept. 10 when a drunken Harold Presley grabbed them and drove off, said Deputy Pima County Attorney Rui Wang.
Presley struck the woman repeatedly and yanked out large clumps of her hair before forcing her out at a fast-food restaurant near South Sixth Avenue and 44th Street, Wang said.
Presley, who was traveling without a car seat, eventually dropped off the baby with someone else and picked up another woman.
Police said that while his baby's mother was talking to police, Presley drove by the fast-food restaurant.
Officers tried to stop Presley, but he turned off his headlights and fled. He drove north in the southbound lanes of South 12th Avenue and into Downtown. While driving west on Congress Street under Interstate 10, Presley's car struck another vehicle.
Presley then turned into a residential area south of Congress Street and west of I-10, smashed into a fence and ran away, police said.
A police dog found Presley hiding under a pickup truck, and officers used pepper spray to subdue Presley when he fought off the dog.
Presley pleaded guilty to one count of kidnapping and two counts of endangerment last month.
Pima County Superior Court Judge Richard Fields ruled Presley's sentence should be served concurrently with a 14-year sentence imposed last month in an unrelated drug and weapons case.
