A Mexican man who was shot by a Border Patrol agent as he tried to flee after a traffic stop has been indicted on smuggling charges as well as charges of assaulting a federal officer.
Luis Barron-Sanchez was named in a 10-count indictment on charges of conspiracy to transport illegal entrants, transportation of illegal entrants, bringing in of illegal entrants and assault on a federal officer with a deadly weapon.
The charges stem from an incident on Jan. 24 when a Border Patrol agent stopped and questioned five people in a 1999 Chevrolet truck, authorities said at the time.
The agent stopped the vehicle because the license plate number matched that of a truck seen loading a group of illegal entrants earlier, according to Arizona Daily Star archives.
As the agent spoke with the group, Barron-Sanchez started to drive away.
The agent held on to the passenger-side door and fired his weapon, striking Barron-Sanchez once in the leg.
The agent suffered cuts and abrasions from falling from the fleeing truck.
The four passengers were illegal entrants, officials said. Court documents indicate that Barron-Sanchez was to be paid $2,500 for each person he transported.
The charges carry a maximum penalty ranging from 10 to 20 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, or both, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Arizona.
