Eight University High School students are heading to Delaware after beating out 16 other teams from around the state in a mock-trial tournament Saturday.
Each student had to play a role in a civil-rights case as part of competition, which was sponsored by the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education.
University High School sent three teams to the competition, and all three teams made it to the finals round.
The top team was made up of Parker Dunbar, Morgan Hanna, Marissa McIntyre, Sara Murray, Qian Tang, Bryan Tom, Jinni Trusko, Max Xiong Wa and coach Barbara Gray.
The other teams came in second and fourth place.
Members were Kristie Gallardo, Ashley Klahr, Yizhou Sun, Julie Zhang, Anthony M. de Gennaro, Kael McCallum, Emma Wohl, David Berens, Kevin Keller, Krista McNaughton, Sarah Tang, Mary Federerwan, Eric Lehnhardt, Heather Romero and Stephanie White. The teams' attorney coaches are Jan Wezelman and Susan Shetter.
Trusko and McCallum won all-state team honors for their outstanding performances throughout the day.
White won the court artist state championship title.
The winning team will head to Wilmington, Del., in May to compete against 44 schools from across the country.
