A distraught man charged deputies with a knife and threw rocks at houses and cars in the Vail area before being tasered early Saturday, a sheriff's spokesman said.
After being tasered, the man fell directly in front of a patrol car, which was unable to stop and rolled on top of him, the spokesman said. The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to a hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening.
No one else was injured.
Here is how the incident unfolded, according to Sgt. James Ogden, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman:
Shortly after 4 a.m., deputies went to the 10000 block of South Alley Mountain Drive, near East Colossal Cave Road in the Vail area, because of reports that a man was standing in the street, throwing rocks at houses and cars and breaking house windows.
The man evidently had been partying with other teenagers throughout the night and had earlier chased people with a knife, Ogden said.
The first deputy to arrive found the man standing in the street. The man began throwing rocks at the marked patrol car, which had its emergency lights on.
The man started walking down the street as further reports came in that he was armed with a knife and earlier reports from witnesses revealed that he had been chasing people with it. He began cutting himself with the knife.
The first deputy waited for backup and two other deputies arrived. Using the slowly rolling patrol car as a barrier, they walked behind it and followed the man as he walked down the street, ordering him to stop.
They followed the man to about East Mary Ann Cleveland Way and South Driscoll Mountain Drive.
At that point, he charged the patrol car and deputies with the knife.
One of the deputies on foot tased him, and the man fell in front of the patrol car.
The investigation is continuing and charges are pending, Ogden said.
