Road Runner by Andrea Kelly : Sign routing drivers to the airport is confusing

When you don't drive to the airport frequently, it's helpful to follow the green road signs with an airplane on them, directing your way.
But reader Don Minow said those signs have confused him on more than one trip, as he was heading southeast on Benson Highway, trying to get to the airport on South Tucson Boulevard.
"Proceeding on the Benson Highway, as I approach Irvington, there is a direction sign showing a right-hand turn to the airport. On a number of occasions I have made this turn — and observe others doing the same thing — only to find I am on Irvington and not on the correct road to the airport," Minow wrote.
He said he's had to make numerous U-turns to get back on track and now tries to remind himself not to turn right from southbound Benson Highway to westbound Irvington.
"The answer is to somehow alter the first sign to alert drivers that the turn to be made is a gentle right turn on Benson to Tucson Boulevard, rather that turning onto Irvington. Remember that a good number of persons going to the airport may not be locals who know how the streets run," Minow said.
Minow's correct — the appropriate turn isn't really a turn at all. It's following the curve in the roadway to the right, which gets traffic from Benson Highway to Tucson Boulevard, said Michael Graham, spokesman for the Tucson Department of Transportation.
"The sign directs people to take the gentle curve from Benson to Tucson," he said.
The sign sports an arrow angled to the right because drivers should not go straight, and they should not turn right, he said.
If the sign had an arrow pointing straight ahead, traffic would likely end up going eastbound on Irvington, he said.
If the sign wanted drivers to turn right, it would have an arrow with a 90-degree angle, pointing to the right.
The diagonal arrow indicates drivers should turn from the diagonal Benson Highway to southbound Tucson Boulevard, he said.
