Parking permits at the UA will cost $24 more next year, and all Zone 1 lots on the south part of campus will be closed by construction projects or converted to lot-specific parking.
The University of Arizona is losing about 1,200 parking spaces in lots along East Sixth Street to the Student Recreation Center expansion and the construction of three new dorms. With four new lots south of Sixth and four new ones in the northern part of campus, the net loss is only about 200 spaces, said Bill Davidson, a spokesman for Parking and Transportation Services.
"The net loss is minimal because of the new lots we have coming in," he said. "But we need to get the word out that next year people will need to move to different areas to park."
With the changes, all lots south of University Boulevard will be either lot-specific or, south of Sixth, zone-specific. Employees and students will need to pay closer attention to which type of permit they select based on where they need to park, Davidson said.
Parking permits will increase $24 across the board. Zone 1 permits will be $303; lot- or street-specific permits will cost $418; parking-garage permits will cost $518. The fee increases will help pay for the CatTran shuttle, motorist assist program, lot maintenance and lighting, and garage construction.
There are no immediate plans for new parking garages, but one is anticipated on the south side of campus within the next few years to accommodate the new residence halls, Davidson said.
Employees currently on the automatic permit-renewal plan will receive an e-mail March 3 to update their permit. Other current permit holders will receive a renewal e-mail March 20 and must respond by April 4 to be guaranteed a permit. Open permit registration begins April 15.
There are about 17,000 total parking spaces on campus.
"Parking and transportation wants to encourage alternate transportation use, including the CatTran shuttle, car pools and biking," Davidson said. "As the campus grows it's increasingly important."
