PHOENIX — Gov. Janet Napolitano has appointed a former legislator and a Hopi tribal official to the board that oversees the three state universities, her office announced Tuesday.
One of the new Board of Regents members is Bob McLendon, a former high school teacher in government and American history who served in the state House of Representatives from 1983 to 2001 and later was a member of the Yuma County Board of Regents.
The second new member is LuAnn Leonard, executive director of the Hopi Education Endowment Fund. Leonard formerly worked in the chairman's office and as director of the tribal Office of Youth Affairs.
Napolitano's office said McLendon will serve a term that expires in 2012, while Leonard's term expires in 2016.
McLendon and Leonard fill seats already vacated by Christina Palacios and Gary Stuart, whose terms expired. Palacios and Stuart were appointees of former Gov. Jane Dee Hull.
The appointments are subject to confirmation by the state Senate.
