PHOENIX — A ban on drinking tap water for nearly 5,000 Paradise Valley and Scottsdale customers was canceled Saturday after tests showed levels of a potentially toxic solvent were again within safe limits.
Arizona American Water issued the order banning use of tap water for drinking and cooking Wednesday after problems with a treatment plant that removes a suspected cancer-causing agent called trichloroethylene, or TCE.
A water-company official said tests completed Saturday and reviewed by state and county officials show levels of the chemical are now below federal safe drinking water standards in American Water's entire system.
American Water's treatment plant in Scottsdale malfunctioned Tuesday but it wasn't discovered until Wednesday. The private company's telephone warning system also failed to notify many of its customers.
After the problem was detected, a test of the water showed TCE levels at 22 parts per billion. Five parts per billion is the maximum allowed.
Rep. Harry Mitchell, D-Ariz., has called for a full investigation by the federal Environmental Protection Agency.
