Reporting on politics has always appealed to Nicole Fagin, and now the Tucsonan gets to do it on a national scale.
Selected as part of MTV's Street Team '08, Fagin will report on politics, candidates and political issues facing the nation as the 2008 election nears.
Her work will be published online as part of the music and pop-culture TV station's "Choose or Lose" campaign, aimed at younger voters.
She will be among 50 other "citizen journalists," from each state and Washington, D.C., producing multimedia reports on 2008 elections geared toward young voters, according to a press release from MTV.
Fagin will focus mostly on issues of importance to Arizonans, but plans to work on issues throughout the state, not just those affecting Tucson and Phoenix, she said.
For example, as one of the largest lettuce-producing communities in the country, Yuma faces challenges with its day- laborer population, Fagin said.
Her profile on MTV's Web site includes a video about the debate over English-only programs at local schools.
She submitted the video as part of her application for the program.
The 21-year-old University of Arizona senior, studying journalism and political science, said this opportunity is right up her alley.
"It's pretty much exactly what I want to do. Covering a presidential campaign is kind of like a dream of mine," Fagin said.
She'll head to an orientation session next week in New York City and then begin reporting on Arizona issues.
All the reporters will use laptops, video cameras and cell phones to tell "the untold political stories that matter most to young people in their respective states," the news release said.
"Right now, I'm just trying to figure out what I want to cover. There's so much that's important to Arizona in this election," Fagin said.
Broadly, her goal is not to overlook anything, but she said she realizes that's lofty in a national campaign season. More specifically, Fagin said she wants to use the opportunity to spur young voters' interest and keep them informed during elections next year. "Nothing out there is tailored to the younger demographic," she said.
Fagin said she hasn't been involved in politics previously, but does have experience in broadcast journalism from internships at the state Legislature's broadcast center and at local ABC affiliate KGUN 9 News.
