An allegation that 16 pet greyhounds disappeared this October after they were hauled from Tucson Greyhound Park to California is being investigated by the Arizona Department of Racing.
The claim was made by the Greyhound Protection League, a greyhound-advocacy group based in California, which says the dogs are being used to hunt coyotes.
The group filed a complaint about the missing dogs with the Department of Racing.
Geoffrey Gonsher, the department's director, said he plans to have his office investigate the complaint in the next 30 days.
Tucson Greyhound Park has, in the past, had a backlog of dogs that are no longer fit to race. Last year the park received national attention after more than 140 retired racers were hauled from the track but never reached their supposed adoption locations.
