A Hispanic journalist slain while covering a 1970 march in Los Angeles will be commemorated with a postage stamp, due in part to efforts at the University of Arizona.
Olga Briseño, director of the Media, Democracy and Policy Initiative in the UA's College of Humanities, collected 1,300 signatures in support of the stamp, as well as resolutions from national Hispanic organizations.
Ruben Salazar was a reporter for the Los Angeles Times when he was killed by police on Aug. 29, 1970, during the National Chicano Moratorium March protesting the Vietnam War.
The Media, Democracy and Policy Initiative has created a Salazar archive, with papers, articles, photos and personal items donated by the family.
The design and release date for the Salazar stamp will be announced by the U.S. Postal Service this fall.
