University of Arizona journalism students publishing a border news Web site are finalists for a national online journalism award.
Border Beat, which was launched in the spring, is one of five finalists for the student award. The winner will be announced at the Online News Association conference and awards banquet on Oct. 18 and 19 in Toronto. The UA students are up against groups from San Francisco State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Nevada in Reno and Columbia University.
Border Beat is produced by students in professor Jay Rochlin's class and is one of two online magazines produced by UA journalism students. The Cat Scan was launched in 2006 and features entertainment, lifestyle and sports news.
Recently, borderbeat.net covered Mexican citizens traveling to Arizona border towns and gave a review of counting methods for border-crosser deaths.
