A 52-year-old man who may have been trying to get out of the sun died Saturday afternoon when he took a nap behind the rear tires of a tractor-trailer and was run over.
Dennis J. Nez, a Tucson resident, was found dead just north of a bus stop at East 36th Street and South Country Club Road shortly after 1:30 p.m., said Officer Frank Amado, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
Nez had taken a bus to the area with his wife and a friend but decided he wanted to rest there at the stop while the two women walked to a nearby business.
That bus stop does not have a bench or an awning and it appears that Nez may have been trying to find some shade when he fell asleep near the wheels of a large semi that was parked and left running near the stop.
However, when the tractor-trailer left, it drove over Nez and he was pronounced dead at the scene, Amado said.
"Detectives need to locate and speak with the driver of the semi truck who may not be aware he drove over Mr. Nez," Amado said.
The high in Tucson on Saturday was 104 degrees, the National Weather Service says.
The tractor-trailer was described as white toward the upper half and orange toward the bottom, Amado said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Tucson Police Department's traffic section at 791-4389.
