For the last five years, one Tucson dentist has organized a fundraiser that brings together Harry Potter fans and pet lovers to benefit the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.
The event, which allows invited guests to watch the latest Harry Potter film in exchange for a donation of pet food, supplies or money, is the brainchild of Dr. Steven Crawford of Desert Mountain Dental.
He came up with the idea after a fellow dentist in Oregon organized a community event that included free food, music and activities for his patients.
Wanting to do something similar for not only his patients but the Tucson community as well, Crawford decided to use the hype surrounding the Harry Potter films and host a viewing party in which he rents out a movie theater at El Con Mall.
This year's fundraiser, which will be held Saturday at 8 a.m., will show the latest installment in the Potter flicks — "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," Crawford said.
There will also be a raffle before the movie with Harry Potter prizes, including calendars, watches, puzzles, figurines and swords.
Last year, Crawford collected $2,700 and 3,000 pounds of pet food and other supplies, he said.
Crawford, who has been in Tucson since 1983, has been involved with the Humane Society for several years. Initially he donated money. But in recent years he began donating his time as a dog walker twice a week as well.
"I've always loved animals, always had dogs or cats, and I just wanted to see what I could do to help," he said.
The items collected are used in the shelter or distributed to pet owners who are going through hard times and cannot afford to buy pet food or supplies, Crawford said.
