PHOENIX — Tired of construction headaches, a loss of business and the prospects of going under, merchants teed off on light-rail officials during the Metro board's final meeting before a summer break.
More than a dozen business owners along the construction line addressed the board Tuesday, saying Phoenix and the Metro staff had failed miserably to properly market and support businesses along the line.
"I will not be open in 30 to 60 days if this continues as it is," said Martha Craig, owner of Central Christian Supply.
Craig said she has laid off three employees and asked others to take a leave of absence. "That is shameful," she said.
Merchants also called for changes on the citizen advisory boards, which critics say have been too generous in granting bonus money to contractors.
