PHOENIX — A Tucson lawmaker will appear on national television this morning to debate Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigrants.
State Rep. Steve Farley, a Democrat, is scheduled to debate Republican commentator Pat Buchanan at 10:30 a.m. on MSNBC.
Farley, who represents Midtown Tucson, voted against an employer-sanctions measure last week, saying it will seriously hurt small businesses. He was recommended for the show by House Democratic leadership and suspects much of the discussion will focus on employer sanctions.
The bill, sponsored by Mesa Rep. Russell Pearce, suspends a company's state license for up to 10 days if it is caught knowingly hiring illegal immigrants. A judge could waive that penalty based on factors ranging from the number of illegal workers employed to the duration of employment. The bill still needs approval from Gov. Janet Napolitano, who is expected to act on it Monday.
Farley says the U.S. and state economies — specifically the agriculture and construction industries — are depended on illegal workers. He says the state should focus more on improving the economies of Central American countries.
"That's where we should be putting our money if we want real national security," he said.
Pearce has said the legislation makes it easy for employers to obey the law by requiring them to verify employment status through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
