In its latest round of grants, Science Foundation Arizona has awarded nearly $1.2 million to four Tucson-based programs as part of the Student & Teacher Discovery initiative.
Overall, 10 programs state-wide will receive $3.2 million from the foundation, which was created last year as a command center to support research in Arizona by distributing $35 million in state money.
The local Student & Teacher Discovery awards are:
● $525,000 to the Arizona Science Teacher Advancement and Research Training program, which will offer courses and research opportunities for biology teachers across the state. The program is coordinated through the University of Arizona.
● $305,000 to a new program, coordinated by the UA, to have students volunteer in monitoring rivers and riparian areas in rural Arizona, in conjunction with local water experts.
● $225,000 to the Hands-On Optics Project through the Tucson-based NOAO, the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, which will provide science education to elementary- and middle-school students in rural areas.
● $125,000 to the Building Information Technology Skills Through Astronomy program, run by NOAO, which will instruct teachers in astronomy workshops in order to bring high-tech topics into the classroom.
Science Foundation has already awarded $4 million for graduate-student fellowships and $4.1 million in seed funding for promising research. In the next phase, the foundation plans to award about $2 million in small-business grants and roughly $18 million for "strategic research groups" that will link industry and public institutions.
