A 3-year-old boy nearly drowned in a spa at an East Side apartment complex Thursday afternoon, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman said.
The boy was in the pool area of the apartments, at 8030 E. Lakeside Parkway, at about 1 p.m. with his 2-year-old sister, his uncle, 19, and a family friend, said Capt. Paul McDonough, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.
The uncle, Frank Pizano, said he went to the bathroom, and when he returned to the pool area, he found his nephew floating face-down in the spa.
"His lips were blue, and I was just freaking out," Pizano said. "I was scared."
The adult friend had been watching the children, and the boy went one way and the girl went the other, McDonough said. The man went after the younger child, and when he looked up, the 3-year-old was floating in the spa.
"It truly does only take a matter of seconds," McDonough said.
Pizano said that when he pulled his nephew out of the pool, the boy wasn't breathing, and Pizano called out asking someone to call 911.
A maintenance supervisor performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the boy, which may have helped save the child's life, McDonough said. The boy was taken to a hospital, and he was listed in critical condition.
It's important for adults to learn CPR and to watch children all the time when they're around water, McDonough said.
