The Burro Derby was an annual event that pitted local politicians and journalists to determine the top burro jockey in Tucson. Held at El Con Shopping Center, the race was part of La Fiesta de los Vaqueros. At the third annual derby on Feb. 5, 1972, Elizabeth Maggio, shown here aboard her trusty steed, raced for the Arizona Daily Star. The winner was local sportscaster and former rodeo bull rider Karl Kindberg.

Tucson Time Capsule: Sideshow for the rodeo

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 02.05.2007
Tucson Time Capsule is a daily photo feature in the Arizona Daily Star.
Each day, we will choose a photo from the Star photo archives to run in the paper and on azstarnet.com. The photo will be one that was taken within the past 35 years, and whenever possible, it will be one taken on the same date in a previous year as the date it will run now.
It may be a groundbreaking, an appearance of a national politician in town or a gathering of Tucsonans at work or play. But whatever it is, it will be a photographic time capsule of Tucson as it was.
Our ongoing collection of "time capsule" photos will be available online at go.azstarnet.com/timecapsule — where you can add your own historic Tucson photos to the collection. Please observe copyright laws.
