Students enrolled in a television broadcast journalism program in Amphitheater Public Schools developed a Web page this summer aimed at curbing fatalities among teenage drivers.
Survive Your Drive Web page contains local and national traffic statistics and driving practices among teenagers.
Erin Krevanik, who is now attending Northern Arizona University and majoring in communications and journalism, was the primary webmaster on the project, said Nancy Montoya, Digital Futures Summer Program instructor at Canyon del Oro High School.
"There was a total of five students who did the research, gathered all the information and put together the graphics," said Montoya who wrote a grant to fund the journalism program.
Students learned through their research that teenagers need more practice behind the wheel because they lack driving experience, Montoya said.
On Sept. 15, Comcast Cable will begin airing public service announcements about the Survive Your Drive campaign that will run for eight weeks.
The television spots include six different announcements that will feature students attending schools within Amphitheater Public Schools and Flowing Wells, Marana, Sahuarita and Tucson unified school districts, Montoya said.
The campaign is to educate parents, youth and community organizations about the causes leading to teen deaths on roadways. It also seeks to find solutions to curb the problem, said Alma L. Yubeta, with the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
Between 1994 and 2004, more than 100 teenagers died in automobile accidents in the Tucson area, said Yubeta. She said teen driving deaths have reached epidemic proportions nationwide.
