When a wireless Internet network goes online at the UA in August, it will cover a much greater portion of campus than originally planned.
Thanks to an internal loan, most of the installation is taking place this summer, instead of in phases over four years, said Bob Lancaster, co-director of the Center for Computing and Information Technology.
The network was approved in April when the Arizona Board of Regents agreed to the University of Arizona's plan to charge students a mandatory $65 fee each semester to support information technology and online library resources.
"Essentially what we were looking at with the student tech fee is that money would dribble in each semester," Lancaster said. "We've done an internal loan that enables us to go ahead and install up front and pay it back when the tech fee comes in. It would've been four years before we could get anywhere near completion."
Workers are testing access points now and expect the network to be operational when students arrive, Lancaster said.
About 800 of an expected 5,000 access points have been installed, concentrated in the center of campus. The wireless network will cover the Student Union Memorial Center, Park Student Union, Integrated Learning Center, Main Library, Science and Engineering Library and the entire Mall from Old Main to North Campbell Avenue.
Access will expand across campus, first to other libraries including law, health sciences and fine arts. Additionally, crews are installing access points in classrooms that are being renovated this summer, hoping to cover 23 in all.
Limited guest access to the network will be available in some areas, but full access will be limited to students, faculty and staff, who must authenticate their personal computers through the CCIT.
