One local legislative candidate has been bumped from the ballot and another just barely qualified after both candidates' petition signatures were challenged.
Ernest Bustamante, a Democrat in Legislative District 29, came up short of the 300 signatures needed to qualify after a Pima County Superior Court judge ruled that some were not suitable, Bustamante said Monday.
Bustamante said he did not have time for a full interview, but did say that he was disappointed by the ruling.
Meanwhile, Betty Liggins, also a Democrat in District 29, qualified by just 10 signatures after 80 or so were disallowed by a judge.
"I walked that 29th district, and everything I got I got from someone who came to the door in jeans or pajamas or a nightgown, and I assumed they were living there," she said.
Liggins had failed to write the word "Democrat" on one of her signature forms. But Judge Sarah Simmons ruled that Liggins' forms still complied with state statute regarding nomination petitions.
Both challenges were filed by Eric Lybeck, who has not returned repeated phone calls.
Also running in District 29 are Democratic incumbents Linda Lopez, Tom Prezelski and Patricia Anne Puig. Bruce Murchison is running as a Republican.
