Charges are unlikely to be filed against a woman believed to have stolen about $800 from a classroom at a local charter school, authorities said Friday.
The incident, which was caught on tape by a teacher who'd set up a hidden camera, apparently will be resolved when the company that hired the woman as a janitor writes a check to La Paloma Academy for the losses, said Sgt. Decio Hopffer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
On Feb. 16, third-grade teacher Karen Stewart placed a camera in her room at La Paloma's main campus, 2050 N. Wilmot Road, after suspecting that janitors were breaking into a locked box and taking money and gift certificates at night.
Stewart said the camera captured images of a female janitor picking the lock on the box and taking about $60 from inside.
After reviewing the tape, the company fired the woman and will reimburse the stolen money, school founder and director Raena Janes said. She expects to receive the check next week.
Hopffer said the woman likely would have been sentenced to community service and participated in a diversion program if arrested and convicted.
Neither her name nor the name of the company that employed her was released.
