No. 2 seed Penn State claims its third ACHA championship in four years

Penn State claimed its second straight American Collegiate Hockey Association national title, defeating the tournament's "Cinderella team," ninth-seeded Delaware 7-2 at Tucson Convention Center last night.

Delaware sophomore Joe Bartlett scored in the first period and senior Clifton Demmer added a power play goal in the third, but in between it was all Penn State.

Icecats' 'best hockey team' ends tourney in 8th place

The Arizona Icecats finished their season with an eighth-place finish in the American Collegiate Hockey Association national championships.

The Icecats lost a tight 8-6 game to top-ranked Eastern Michigan yesterday morning at the Tucson Convention Center.

Illinois outlasts No. 3 Minot St.; Icecats lose 8-3

Third-ranked Minot State fell to No. 6 Illinois in overtime yesterday afternoon, 5-4, in the American College Hockey Association national club hockey tournament at the Tucson Convention Center.

Minot struggled early in the first period as the Illini scored on their first shot 4:53 into the game. Illinois scored another goal less than a minute and a half before the end of the first period, leading 2-0 as the teams left the ice.

Another upset for Delaware

On the second day of the American Collegiate Hockey Association nationals, a surprise team advanced to the final four while two others were eliminated. No. 9 Delaware rallied to oust No. 8 Michigan-Dearborn in overtime, 7-6.

Hens rally to beat No. 1 E. Michigan

No. 9 seed Delaware upset No. 1 Eastern Michigan 6-5 yesterday, the first day of the American Collegiate Hockey Association at Tucson Convention Center.

An Eastern Michigan goal broke a 4-4 tie at 7:21 into the third period, but the Blue Hens fought back.

Icecats coach endured long, tough journey

Arizona Icecats coach Leo Golembiewski was told by many that he was nuts, but that never stopped him from starting an ice hockey team in the middle of the desert.

Golembiewski grew up in Lyons, Ill., and learned to play hockey on frozen rivers and driveways. He played college hockey for Benedictine College and was invited to the St. Louis Blues' training camp in 1971.
