Public shows and auctions

What Tucsonans call "the gem show" is actually an amalgamation of retail and wholesale shows that dot the city.

Here's a rundown of retail opportunities. For information, check www.azstarnet.com/gem.

1 48th annual Tucson Gem & Mineral Show

Tucson Convention Center, 260 S. Church Ave.,

Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 14-16; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 17

Admission: $5.50; children 14 years old and under free when accompanied by an adult.

What: Highlights are African art, gems and minerals. Also, mineral jewelry, gems, fossils, beads, lapidary creations, geodes and meteorites. Earth sciences maze and hands-on displays for kids.

2 Globe-X Gem, Mineral, Fossil & Jewelry Show

Days Inn, 222 S. Freeway Road

Hours: 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Jan. 31-Feb. 15

What: Gemstones, decorator minerals, polished minerals, beads, opals, amber, crystals and septariums. Also wholesale.

3 Gem & Lapidary Wholesalers Inc.

Rodeway Inn, 1365 W. Grant Road (at Interstate 10)

Hours: Public auction begins at 10 a.m. Feb. 16

What: Gems, minerals, lapidary equipment, beads. Wholesale show with public auction.

4 Pacifica Trade Shows
Holiday Inn Express, 750 W. Starr Pass Blvd. (at Interstate 10)

Hours: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Feb. 2-16.

What: Minerals, fossils, gemstones, rough jewelry and metaphysical merchandise. Also wholesale.

Et cetera: Another Pacifica wholesale location is the Howard Johnson Inn, 1010 S. Freeway.

5 A Beaucoup Congé

Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 2-16

What: Beads and minerals. Also wholesale.

6 Tucson Electric Park Gem and Mineral Show

7 Intergem's Congress Street Gem Show

Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 2-17.

What: Gems, beads, jewelry, minerals and crystals. Also wholesale.

8 Rapa River

Hours: 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 2-17

What: Imports, rocks and minerals. Also wholesale.

9 La Quinta Group

10 Arizona Mineral & Fossil Show (four sites)

What: American Indian crafts from more than 210 tribes.

12 J&J Promotions: The Bead Renaissance Show

Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 4-9.

What: Bead artists and merchants; vintage and contemporary jewelry.

13 Atrium Productions
Pueblo Inn (formerly Sheraton Four Points Hotel), 350 S. Freeway Road

Hours: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Feb. 4-16

What: Gemstones, designer jewelry, gold, minerals and collector specimens.

14 Crystal Myths Inc. - Best Bead Show

Kino Veterans' Memorial Community Center, 2805 E. Ajo Way

Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 6-9; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Feb. 10

What: Glass, porcelain, brass, silver beads and tools and supplies.

15 The Whole Bead Show
The Windmill Inn of Tucson, 4250 N. Campbell Ave.

Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 6-7; noon-9 p.m. Feb. 8; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 9-11

Admission: $5; no charge for wholesalers.

What: Bead makers, merchants and traders. Also wholesale.

16 Dell Productions
Tucson Scottish Rite, 160 S. Scott Ave.

Hours: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 6-17

What: Beads, carvings, scrimshaw, jewelry and supplies.

17 Tucson Westward Look Resort Mineral Show

245 E. Ina Road

Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 8-12

What: Fine minerals. Reception and program 7-10 p.m. Feb. 10. Reception seating limited. Also wholesale.

Wholesale shows

Wholesale shows set their own policies. Buyer registration usually requires a business license and/or tax-exempt certificate/resale tax identification and business card. Some shows may open a few days earlier than indicated for their special, high-ticket buyers.
