arrowOne out of every four mammals on Earth is a bat, and bats can do some amazing things. The California leaf-nosed bat can hear and locate a cricket's footstep, and a single brown bat can catch 600 mosquitoes in one hour.

arrowHave you ever held your bedroom door so your brother can't come in? The trapdoor spider does the same thing. It spins a door out of silk and dirt at the entrance to its den. When a predator tries to come in, the spider holds the door shut with its mouth while bracing its legs against the wall of the tunnel. Smart spider.

arrowChuckwalla lizards protect themselves from predators in an unusual way. They crawl into cracks between rocks and gulp in air. The loose skin of their necks and backs stretches as they fill with air, and they tightly fill the cracks. Predators cannot pry them loose from their hiding spots.

arrowA hawk's vision is seven times more powerful than human eyesight. A hawk can spot a rabbit running on the ground two miles away. If a hawk could read, it could sit on a football field's goal post and read a newspaper stuck on the opposite goal post.
