Hummingbirds eat two to three times their body weight each day. A 50-pound kid would have to consume 100 to 150 pounds of nectar and insects a day to keep up with a hummingbird.
Plants attract pollinators through their colors, scents and shapes. For example, bees like pink, yellow, purple or blue flowers with "landing pad" shapes. Bees, butterflies and bats like sweet scents. But hummingbirds like red, yellow, orange or purple flowers with tube shapes and no scent.
Birds' bones are hollow. Why? So they won't weigh the bird down. Many birds' feathers weigh two to three times more than their bones.
Although centipede means "100 legs," the common giant desert centipede has only 42 legs.
Kangaroo rats have cheek pouches for carrying seeds, as do many other rodents, but theirs are on the outside of their mouths. Why? They don't need to open their mouths to put in seeds. This keeps them from losing precious water to the outside air.
