Teen essays
The following essays were written by Tucson teen-agers who are involved with Voices, an organization that brings together low-income youth with professional writers and photographers to create community-based publications. The program
specifically emphasizes journalism, documentary photography and oral

The Healing Desert
Lorraine Rainey Varela, 18, is a senior at Cholla High School. In her essay, she reveals how the desert has not only been her home, but an important healing remedy in her life.

The Invisible Desert
Linda Chavaria, 14, lives in a neighborhood just south of downtown Tucson and attends a charter school. She describes why she loves living in the desert despite her urban surroundings.
