Firefighters continued to make progress Wednesday in corralling the Alambre Fire near Kitt Peak and expect to have it fully contained by Saturday night.
Officials were calling the blaze — which started Saturday about 45 miles southwest of Tucson — 80 percent contained following their nightly briefing. It grew to 7,267 acres, but the threat to the Kitt Peak Observatory was significantly diminished for a second straight day, said Jonetta Holt, a spokeswoman for the Eastern Arizona Incident Management Team.
Cooler, more humid and less windy weather conditions allowed crews to work closer to the fire Wednesday, which is the preferred method for firefighters, she said. No rain fell, but temperatures stayed in the mid-90s and the relative humidity kept the flames at a manageable height, she said.
They won't rule out the danger to Kitt Peak but feel confident their lines will hold.
"It has been significantly diminished," Holt said. "There is even less a risk to Kitt Peak today than yesterday."
There was also a fire burning in the Santa Rita Mountains just north of the Helvetia Mine, said Celeste Gordon, a spokeswoman for the Coronado National Forest. The blaze burned about four acres by Wednesday evening. The fire is southeast of Tucson.
