Tucson-based ImaRx Therapeutics Inc. has signed a letter of intent with a Canadian company to manufacture and further develop a clot-dissolving drug owned by ImaRx.
Under the pact, Microbix Biosystems Inc. of Toronto will make urokinase, a thrombolytic or clot-busting drug, which ImaRx acquired from Abbott Laboratories in 2006.
The drug, branded Abbokinase, is federally approved for treatment of patients with acute massive pulmonary embolism, or blood clots in the lungs.
ImaRx said it will retain existing supplies of the drug and exclusive rights to sell it for its currently approved use, while gaining access to a long-term supply of the drug through an agreement with Microbix.
Microbix will have the right to develop the drug for additional approved uses in vascular disease, ImaRx said.
