A multi-state market conduct review of health insurance company HealthMarkets Inc. by state insurance departments was critical of the company's consumer disclosures, oversight and training of agents, claims handling and complaint handling practices.
The three subsidiary companies are MEGA Life and Health Insurance Co., Mid-West National Life Insurance Co. of Tennessee and The Chesapeake Life Insurance Co.. Combined they had around 30,000 policyholders in Arizona at the end of 2006 — the latest figures available, according to the Arizona Department of Insurance.
In the company's response, included in the 112-page report, HealthMarkets said it already has addressed or is actively addressing the report's findings. Consumers may call the Arizona Department of Insurance consumer affairs division at 1-800-325-2548.
