A former ice rink on the East Side is set to become home to a passport-service company contracted by the federal government, employing up to 200 workers.
Stanley Inc. will oversee the printing, quality control and mailing of U.S. passports for the U.S. Department of State at the facility, 7333 E. Rosewood St., near Kolb and Speedway, officials announced Monday.
The company plans to remodel the 52,000-square-foot facility and expects to hire 150 to 200 full- and part-time employees beginning in the spring, according to Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities Inc., the local economic development agency.
Paul Belanger, Stanley's senior vice president, said interviews will begin after Jan. 1. Information will be posted at www.stanleyassociates.com.
The Arlington, Va.-based company was named one of the 100 best companies to work for in 2007 by Fortune magazine.
The magazine cited the fact that employees own 71 percent of the company and that for those summoned to active military duty, Stanley pays the difference in salary up to $100,000.
The average Stanley systems analyst earns about $56,000 annually and its passport associates earn about $24,000, according to the company's profile in Fortune.
TREO officials said Stanley selected Tucson for its new operation because of the workforce, its western U.S. location and the available facility.
"Stanley Associates brings quality high-technology jobs that will further strengthen and diversify Arizona's economy," Gov. Janet Napolitano said in a statement. "The company will fill a critical void for the nation in speeding processing of U.S. passports, while adding to the significant homeland security strengths already in Southern Arizona."
Stanley also operates a passport facility in Hot Springs, Ark. Stanley is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol SXE.
