The vast majority of readers who responded to last week's online poll about the local economy believe that health-insurance costs are out of control, and 42 percent said they or their families were doing worse financially than they were five years ago.
On the flip side, 37 percent of respondents said they were doing better financially compared with five years ago. Twenty percent said they were doing about the same.
On the question of health insurance, 86 percent said costs were out of control.
When we asked which factor is the most important for a strong local economy, 50 percent said it was high-paying jobs.
More than 150 people responded to the online poll. Due to technical difficulties, many responses to the open-ended question about what must be done to improve the economic situation for Southern Arizonans were lost. We apologize for the error.
Some ideas for improving the local economy included:
● Sealing the border and deporting illegal immigrants.
● Lowering property taxes and eliminating new taxes.
● Improving vocational training in schools so that the community has more trained craftsmen.
