Tucsonans who salivate at the thought of In-N-Out burgers no longer have to drive to Phoenix to get their fix.

The long-awaited first In-N-Out Burger location in Tucson, at 3711 E. Broadway at El Con Mall, is opening today, the Irvine, Calif.-based chain announced Monday.

The restaurant is scheduled to open at 10:30 a.m. but may open earlier, according to workers at the site Monday. Closing time is 1 a.m.

The family-owned chain now has more than 200 restaurant locations in California, Nevada and Arizona, according to a company marketing representative. In-N-Out's reputation for fresh ingredients and simple fast-food staples, such as burgers, fries and shakes, has earned the chain a cult following and praise from the likes of Julia Child.

The company maintains tight control over its operations. Restaurants are built by In-N-Out's own construction team, and beef is boned and ground by the company's own butchers.

A second In-N-Out for the region is planned to open by midsummer in Marana.
