More call-center positions are coming to Tucson, as apac customer services inc. announced that it will add more than 400 jobs to its Tucson payroll.
That will nearly double the size of the company's local work force, which now stands at about 500, said Shayne Farrell, Tucson site director.
Farrell said the company is hiring because of increased work for a client firm he declined to identify, except to say that it is in the health-care field.
The East Side APAC center near East 22nd Street and South Pantano Road handles inbound customer-service calls only, he said.
The Tucson center also handles calls for companies in the communications, travel and entertainment fields, he added.
Pay varies with experience and can start between $8.75 and $11.25 an hour, but it can go up to $13.25 with bonuses, not including overtime, he said.
An announcement of the hiring said preferred candidates should have "strong communications skills, a basic knowledge of computers, a positive attitude" and be able to type at least 18 words per minute.
All APAC employees in Tucson are considered full-time workers putting in at least 32 hours a week, Farrell added.
A benefits package for medical, dental and vision coverage is available to employees after they work 90 days, he said.
The Tucson area is home to about 40 call-center employers, said Laura Shaw, vice president of marketing and communications at Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities Inc.
Shaw said companies in the field are more competitive, and wages and benefits in the industry locally seem to be on the rise, along with numbers of workers.
This month, three local teleservices operations — Convergys Corp., Geico and Citigroup Inc. — announced plans to hire nearly 2,000 more workers over the next two years.
