SCOTTSDALE — Online bill-payment firm PayPal will open a technology development center in Scottsdale by the end of the year and hire more than 400 professionals by 2009.
PayPal announced it will locate its planned center in a new 92,000-square-foot building on the northeast corner of Mountain View Road and 90th Street, bypassing Scottsdale's planned SkySong technology park.
PayPal's decision, announced Tuesday, brings to fruition plans announced last year by the company's parent, eBay Inc., to open a facility in the Phoenix area.
Last fall, online search leader Google Inc., unveiled plans for a new technology center that would employ some 600 workers in the Phoenix area. Google in March said it would open a temporary office on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe.
PayPal joins other high-tech firms setting up shop or expanding in the Phoenix area. Google Inc. plans to bring 600 engineering, software-development and technical support positions to a new facility, starting in a temporary site on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe. Intel Inc. plans to build a third computer chip plant in Chandler and hire 1,000 additional workers.
San Jose, Calif.-based PayPal hopes to start operations in Scottsdale by November, said spokeswoman Jamie Patricio.
The company will immediately hire about 100 product development, operations and infrastructure design, engineering and support professionals, Patricio said, adding to a core team already working here.
She said PayPal targeted the Phoenix area for its expansion because of a growing technology sector. It narrowed the selection to Scottsdale because of quality housing, upscale amenities and the quality labor pool such an environment attracts, Patricio said.
PayPal, founded in 1998, processes online payments with high security and without sharing personal financial information with merchants.
