"Why, mummy, why?"
Munchkin is staring up at me, his saucer-sized blue-gray eyes questioning.
I've just spent a few moments explaining why a basketball net lies in our backyard, still there 18 months after us acquiring it. And why it's daddy's job, not mine, to put it up. And why perhaps Munchkin should remind daddy to do it, because I'm tired of doing so.
"Mummy can't do it," I tell him with a shrug.
"Why, mummy, why?"
Why is his favorite new word. Nothing new here; he's two going on three, after all. . . .
Except this time I think he means it.
And it unsettles me. He's an old soul, Munchkin, and when these huge eyes bore into you, it's hard not to tell the truth, or at the very least face it.
"You're right," I say. "There's no reason why mummy can't do it."
Ah but there is! I think. One is my ignorance of tools and general handyman tasks. Another is my illogical brain, and another is my tendency to use Hubby as a DIY crutch.
But Hubby's not here, and that basketball net has sat there too long. . . .
