Online shopping site of the week: Verlu (www.verlu.com).
Beautiful and unusual handcrafted jewelry that adheres to fair-trade principles isn't that easy to come by. But Verlu has a wonderful selection.
According to the site, "All of Verlu's products are handcrafted and assembled in Bali, Indonesia, where the New Zealand-native designer has resided for the last 20 years. The vast majority of organic materials used are native to the South Pacific and no endangered species are used."
The results include the "Brown Sugar" collection of stunning earrings, necklaces and bracelets made of sterling silver and palm tree wood; chains of silver and rosewood; rings of silver and yellow mother of pearl; and bangles made of ebony.
Verlu also makes homewares ranging from picture frames to salad servers.
The only hitch is that you cannot buy directly from the site. The site includes an extensive catalog (sans prices), as well as a list of retail establishments (some online) that carry Verlu.
