Book report
So you need a new decorative pillow, huh? Before you go looking for one, consider buying a measuring tape and sewing kit and making your own.
"The Pillow Book: Over 25 Simple-to-Sew Patterns for Every Room and Every Mood" (Chronicle Books, $24.95) by Shannon Okey is a sewing guide for homeowners who know that throw pillows can transform beds and couches, but they don't know how to make them.
With more than 25 pillow patterns, the book includes projects ranging from beginner-level pillow making to the expert crafter.
Chapters cover common materials and techniques, basic shapes and styles, decorative techniques and unusual shapes, pillows for different rooms in the house, and pillows for kids.
All designs are accompanied by a list of fabric and supplies needed, and step-by-step instructions. A pocket full of patterns also is included.
