Injuries to key players may hamper Wildcats

Arizona pitcher Alicia Hollowell said Tuesday afternoon she expects to be ready to take the circle again soon, despite suffering a facial fracture from a ball that hit her in the face last weekend.
In the sixth inning of the UA's game against Texas on Sunday, the Longhorns' MicKayla Padilla hit a line drive off Hollowell's face, leaving marks from the ball's stitches on her left cheek bone, which still were evident Tuesday.
"They took X-rays, and I saw a doctor," Hollowell said Tuesday. "I have a fracture. As of right now, I'll be out a week."
The UA's career-wins leader said she "feels fine" and will get other opinions from doctors this week.
Coach Mike Candrea added it is too early to tell when she will be able to return.
"Right now we're in the process of seeing some doctors, and the biggest thing is her well-being," Candrea said. "I know Alicia, and I know she'll be back as quick as she can. But right now, it's hard to say what the future will hold."
Hollowell said she remembers the play and felt fine after it happened, but then ran into problems later on.
"I saw the ball off the bat and it hit me in the face," she said. "It wasn't until later on when we were at the hospital that it started swelling up and getting worse."
In the interim, Arizona will rely on the arm of Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week Taryne Mowatt.
The sophomore pitched a no-hitter and a perfect game at the Judi Garman Classic over the weekend and could see action in all three games this weekend.
"That's a realistic situation," Candrea said. "We've done it before, and I think in softball, you can go back-to-back-to-back. If it had to be, we'd make that happen."
However, the team might be able to call on Leslie Wolfe, if needed. Wolfe has had a sore back for the last month.
In addition to Hollowell's injury, junior center fielder Caitlin Lowe hurt her left hand during the same inning while sliding into a base.
She is expected to be out for close to a month, Candrea said.
"Everyone heals a little differently. But we're hoping four to six (weeks)," Candrea said. "Knowing Caitlin, it will be closer to four than it will be six."
