Chris Fernandez spent Sunday calling members of his semi-pro Arizona Rush, telling them they did not qualify for the Women's Premier Soccer League playoffs.
Monday, he called them back.
The Tucson-based Rush will indeed play in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs, Fernandez learned Monday. Oklahoma Alliance FC, winners of the Big Sky South division, decided Monday it could not afford to fly to Salt Lake City to face the Utah Spiders.
That leaves the Rush, the runner-up in the Big Sky North division, headed to Utah.
"It's kinda like a second life, and hopefully we take advantage of it," Fernandez said. "Everybody had already returned their uniforms and their bags. We're gonna have to pass everything out on Wednesday."
The Rush will play the Spiders at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Spiders rattled off three straight wins last week to surge past the Rush by a tiebreaker and qualify for the playoffs.
The Rush will rent two 12-person vans and drive to Utah on Friday.
"They're a very good team, and I feel we're a pretty good team," Fernandez said of the Spiders. "I think this will decide who the best team in the division is."
With a win, the Rush would advance to the WPSL's Final Four on Aug. 2-3 in Sacramento, Calif.
