Rush falls 1 goal shy of playoffs, but 'will definitely' return in '09Arizona Daily Star

The Arizona Rush, Tucson's semi-pro women's soccer team, finished the season with the fewest losses in its division, but the team still won't make the playoffs.
The Rush watched from afar Sunday as the Utah Spiders defeated Colorado Springs United 6-1 to advance to the playoffs as champions of the Women's Premier Soccer League Big Sky North division.
The league awards three points for every win and one for each tie. Arizona and Utah finished with 27 points apiece, and the teams split two games against each other.
The Spiders, however, scored one more total goal against the Rush in the head-to-head matchups — winning the tiebreaker.
"It's not even a point; it's a goal," Rush coach Chris Fernandez said. "And that's even worse."
The Rush ended its season July 13 by scoring a goal in injury time to defeat Denver 3-2 and finish 8-1-3. The team needed Utah to lose or tie in just one of its three games this week — but that did not happen.
"We felt the soccer gods were with us and it was meant to be," Fernandez said. "I don't think anyone was ready for the season to be over. It's been a tough one to swallow."
The Rush finished its first season in the WPSL, and Fernandez said the team "will definitely" return next season. The Rush will try to book a game against the Mexican national team to be played next May or June, in addition to league play.
"It just wasn't meant to be this time," Fernandez said. "It's going to make us hungry. We definitely have something to look forward to."
