Our community has the opportunity to meet the four candidates for the Tucson Unified School District's top job in the next 10 days.
Our idea is for all concerned about the district take advantage of that opportunity during forums with each candidate at Catalina Magnet High School, 3645 E. Pima St., west of Alvernon Way. All are scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m. They include:
● Monday — Rick Myers, retired IBM Corp. executive and a member of the TUSD Blue Ribbon committee.
● Tuesday — Patti Lopez, deputy superintendent for TUSD.
● Wednesday — Delfino Alemán, one of five area superintendents for California's San Diego Unified School District.
● March 3 — Elizabeth Celania-Fagen, an associate superintendent of the Des Moines (Iowa) Independent School District.
The selection process began with a Search Advisory Committee of 22 community members and TUSD staffers, who reviewed 21 applications, ranking candidates on experience, background and training. Ten applicants were recommended to the board, five of whom were interviewed before the finalists were named.
The forums should be the opportunity for the candidates to clarify their management style, to see how they interact with community members and think on their feet.
These forums also will help the TUSD Governing Board evaluate the district's next leader and begin a dialogue with the person the board appoints next month.
