UA President Robert Shelton appointed current vice provost Juan R. García to be the university's new vice president for instruction and dean of the University College.
García, who joined the faculty of the UA's history department in 1981, had been serving as vice provost for faculty affairs.
The new combined position will give García vice presidential oversight of instruction in the UA's various colleges, schools, departments and centers, as well as oversight of academic support programs, the University Teaching Center and the Integrated Learning Center.
As dean, he will lead the University College, which houses advising and majors-exploration programs for undecided and transitional students, as well as interdisciplinary majors.
"Juan García has a distinguished record of leadership and academic accomplishment, and I am pleased that he has accepted this new position," Shelton said in a statement announcing the appointment.
"I am sure that his efforts will ultimately help enhance the academic experience for thousands of UA students."
García's appointment awaits approval of the Arizona Board of Regents, which meets March 6 and 7 in Tempe.
