In his new position as University of Arizona dean of admissions, Paul Kohn — a native New Yorker — has been working to increase the UA's enrollment, as well as the academic quality and diversity of the student body.
Kohn was promoted in November to vice provost for enrollment management and dean of admissions.
Applications to the UA are about 10 percent ahead of the record pace set last year, with about 19,000 already received for the fall semester. Kohn said he expects to receive 25,000 total by the fall, roughly 3,000 more than last year.
Kohn grew up in Brooklyn and went to high school in Manhattan. He received a bachelor's degree in animal science and a master's degree in educational administration, both from Cornell University, working as a high school science teacher in Brooklyn in between.
He moved to Tucson in 1989 and worked as a substitute teacher before starting as an academic advisor at the UA in 1990. He's since earned a Ph.D. in educational psychology and held several jobs in enrollment, financial aid and the agriculture college before becoming dean of admissions.
"I came here in large part because of the university being here. When you're looking to leave the Northeast and go to a place that's sunny and warm and has a compelling university, you have a very limited range of choices," Kohn said.
A quick Q&A:
What are your favorite New York memories?
"The thing about New York that's incredible is the pace of life and the challenge of keeping up with the many diversions, distractions and interesting things that whirl around you. It's an incredibly dynamic place to grow up."
Do you still visit or follow the sports or news from New York?
"My mother and many of my friends still live in New York so I go back at least four times a year. As far as the news, I was quoted in last week's Sunday Times and I had friends around the world who noticed that."
What do you miss most about New York?
"I miss being able to walk about the city. It's a really great feature that's difficult to produce, really, anywhere else. A university campus and a university town has some of that.
"The other thing I miss is the great variety of food in New York."
What are some of your favorite things about Tucson?
"I'm a runner and cyclist and I very much enjoy escaping into nature really quickly from the city limits. "
