A summary of last week's editorials in the Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 12.27.2008
● Sen. John McCain should take on Arizona issues in the Senate; with his seniority and clout, the GOP's most visible senator could do a great deal to help his home state move forward. Sunday
● Alcoholics and addicts who are being offered $300 in exchange for undergoing a longterm birth-control procedure may be incapable of informed decision-making. Monday
● Poinsettias to philanthropy by Jim Click and by the Qwest Foundation, and to holiday parades, the Salvation Army's Deep Freeze operation, and others. Tuesday
● The reprint of the famous 1897 New York Sun editorial that said "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus," is relevant today. It brings back the foundation of what the holidays should be: a time for kids to be laughing, a time for adults to set aside their worries for a few hours. Wednesday
● The list of charitable organizations that the Star supported in 2008. We choose to support children and families, education, community literacy and community projects advocated through our editorials. Thursday
● The University of Arizona is considering using pay cuts to balance its budget; any reductions must be skewed toward protecting the lowest-paid employees. Friday
