A missile made by Tucson-based Raytheon Missile Systems failed to hit its mark in a missile-defense test firing from a Japanese warship on Wednesday, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency said.
During the test, a Japanese guided-missile destroyer fired a Raytheon-made Standard Missile-3 Block IA in an attempt to intercept a dummy missile fired from a range on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
It was the second flight test of the missile from a Japanese warship after a successful intercept from a different Japanese ship in December 2007. That test was the 12th successful intercept for the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system's SM-3.
Raytheon said in a prepared statement that the company would wait to comment on the test until the engineering analysis is complete, adding that the company remains confident in the system.
