The driver of a car carrying a load of marijuana died Monday afternoon southwest of Benson when he hit another vehicle head-on while being pursued by U.S. Border Patrol agents.
At about 1 p.m. Monday, Border Patrol agents instructed two men inside a 2001 Saturn to pull over for secondary inspection at a checkpoint about 10 miles south of Interstate 10 on Arizona 90, said Lt. Paul Moncada of the Benson Police Department. But the driver of the Saturn failed to obey and fled north on Arizona 90, Moncada said.
A pursuit ensued with the Border Patrol following the Saturn.
At about 1:10 p.m., as the Saturn approached the intersection of South Whetstone Commerce Drive and Arizona 90, about a half-mile south of Interstate 10, the driver attempted to go around an RV making a left turn and lost control of the vehicle, Moncada said.
The Saturn slid into southbound traffic and hit a 1997 Ford Explorer that was stopped in traffic, he said. Benson police officers found the driver of the Saturn, Edgar G. Castro, a 21-year-old legal permanent resident with a Sierra Vista address, dead at the scene.
The passenger in the Saturn, an 18-year-old man whose name was not released, was air-lifted to University Medical Center in Tucson. He survived and was later released. It is unknown if he is a U.S. citizen, Moncada said.
The man and the woman in the Ford Explorer were taken to a Benson hospital with minor injuries, Moncada said.
Officers found 120 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of the Saturn, which was reported stolen out of Sierra Vista, he said.
Benson police are considering charging the passenger in the Saturn with transporting drugs and will send the case to the Cochise County Attorney's Office when it's ready, Moncada said. Currently, the passenger is not in custody, Moncada said.
